Change takes courage

(01/18/2012 Liberty, Texas) When the CEC Jail Corporation who runs the Liberty County Jail wants more money and the red flags are already up, responsible Liberty County elected officials like Liberty County Judge Craig McNair get concerned and its time for an evaluation.

CEC (Community Education Centers) Inc. has a long history in Liberty County of abusing prisoners, conspiracy, selling contraband in the jail, sexually assaulting prisoners, taking bribes, official oppression, denying medical attention, lawsuit after lawsuit after lawsuit, denial of water, feces and urine in the food and drink given to prisoners, rancid and rotten food, not feeding prisoners even a minimum amount of food to keep them from getting sick- and they want more money… something has to give.

Also at work or a lack thereof... is current Liberty County Sheriff Henry Patterson who refuses to take control, oversight or responsibility for the people’s lives who reside under the Liberty County Taxpayer’s roof in his building. His close buddy Jail Warden Timothy New is an abomination in his callous disregard for even the minimum amount of human rights.

In steps Liberty County Judge Craig McNair… he surveys the sum total of all the human rights violations, the lawsuits and the abuses. Wisely he hires a very reputable local attorney named Mr. Jay Arnold ESQ. and asks him to investigate possible CHANGE, positive CHANGE. People… it takes strong resolve to take action and not sit idly by like generation after generation of Democrat of Liberty County past. Judge Craig McNair is going to get an "independent" legal and ethical evaluation of what’s going on over at the jail.

Liberty County Judge Craig McNair has courage- the kind of courage it takes to make positive change and he deserves our full support. Mark this date; Judge McNair continues to be a credit to Liberty County and the Republican Party.

The premature negative language from our current sheriff tellsmetwo things. Number one, he has no respect for the taxpayer or he would at least wait until he had the data to compare what it would cost to run it ourselves. Number two, he is already claiming both his opponents are too busy with other jobs, but he is the only one who balked at the possibility of more responsibility.

Read my lips: HENRY PATTERSON IS INCAPABLE OF RUNNING A JAIL PROPERLY.

I doubt we will want the county to take back the jail but I appreciate Craig doing his due diligence.

As predicted, Republicans are turning over all of the rocks looking for ways to be more efficient. This is a unique time in our local politics. I am a Republican and realize our side will get some political criminals elected sooner or later, but it is nice to see the judges and the clerks all heading the train toward success by working together.

I guess since Henry doesn't show up at Commissioners Court meetings, then the County Judge has to make the decision to look into to situation at the jail. Which I thought was the Sheriff's job. I also guess Melvin Hunt and Todd Fontenot thought everything was fine at the jail, since they approved an extension for CEC. Heres the Judge and commissioners working on things that Henry should have already taken care of and reported back to Commissioners Court. I don't guess you can get much work done from the Hot Biscuit.

torn here... Yes, there's
""foxes guarding the hen house""; (CEC) but then again... who'd want the "eggs" that are IN there??? Personally, I prefer the "momma eagle" method: Line those nests with thorns, and maybe, they'll leave and never come BACK!!! Fat chance...

What a can of worms! Patterson cannot run a jail. CEC cannot run a jail well. The taxpayers invest a lot of money and some prisoners get crimes and abuses committed against them while supposedly in the custody of the good guys.

In the end having a third party run the jail means the Sheriff and the County have less civil liabilty and less accountability. That is good legally but bad morally and ethically. The sheriff should run the jail. The sheriff should be accountable to have a clean, safe jail. Keep it simple. Keep it straight. That means it is up to the voters to give Patterson the boot and make sure the sheriffs elected in the future have the competence to do it right.

Ive been reading the comments here, I believe the last comment was right on the money and I commend the commenter. I also believe that Bobby Rader is the only one running for sheriff who can do the job, that is why he has my vote. Thanks again for the great comment.

Patterson is as guilty as Timothy New.

"foxes guarding the hen house"?
REALITY CHECK, clueless folks.....

Comes down to this question:
Which has more "foxes," CEC or LCSO?(that's options A & B)

Durned if I know which would be an improvement, over the other.
So, WHERE can I vote: "none of the above"???

What's option C? Bobby Rader?

(and where's HE going to get a squad of non-"Foxes" to guard the joint- not to mention, how could anybody BUT a "fox".... survive the jailhouse's clients)?

Pie in the sky ethics is one thing... but with THAT clientele?

IMHO- they've been coddled, far too long! Bring in that Arizona sheriff, who has em out, wearing PINK, and bustin' rocks!!! Has he started a contract, jail management business yet? THAT's who I'd replace CEC with... LMAO

Amen Brother... on the story.

to the responder that said there is less leability with CEC running the jail... I disagree whole heartedly... The liability is just as bad if not worse for the county as the inmates are still under the custody of the SHERIFF, not CEC. Liability is not released to CEC...

The Arizona Sheriff referred to above runs his own jail. It is run by an outside company.

When we hire a sheriff such as Bobby Rader and if he were given control of the jail he would find the right people to serve as jail personnel. Why? because he is a competent manager and a good judge of people (no pun intended). That is a big reason to hire a competent person as sheriff in the firs place, because such a sheriff will hire good people. Such a sheriff will select people compatible with his ethics.

A good sheriff makes for good ethics. Research it. The best jails in the country are not run by private jail corporations. The private corporation is only better when you have poorly qualified sheriffs who cannot handle the management of a jail. That is not pie in the sky it is just a fact.

CEC has deep pocket insurance and a staff of lawyers. A big part of such a company's pitch to be hired is based on reducing or eliminating financial awards from the County to a plaintiff. The county and the sheriff will routinely be named in a jail suit BUT, the county has less liability as a defendant when any direct actions were perpetrated by a third party company hired after a due dilgence selection process of the third part. In other words the County can generally separate itself from liability unless it can be proved that the County had a direct responsibilty for whatever the alledged dirty deed was. IF this were not the case there would be next to no reason to turn the jail over to a third party. Any dumb ass actions by employees the county neither selected nor supervised could bankrupt the county.
Check your history and find out why the County hired CEC in the first place and you will find that minimizing liability was the major reason.

CEC has pissed off the wrong people, if they want to stay in Liberty County they are going to have to get their check book out.

CEC thinks they can get away with any crime against the people of Liberty County they wants because they are protecting the county from lawsuits and therefore the county looks the other way at CEC's crimes against the people.

"get away with any crime against 'the people' of LC"??

Let's not confuse the jail's customers (the dregs of LC,) with the good people of LC. Those are hardly, our sterling citizens! In fact, they're IN THERE, to protect the rest of us from both their presence, their criminal tendencies, and their proximity...

Frankly, I don't care what abuses those inmates endure (though, IMHO- it's mostly from their fellow inmates.)
We've allowed our prison systems to be full healthcare, health clubs, fitness centers, rodeos, universities, recreation centers, libraries, crime training centers, and country clubs... for far too long. The "crossbar Hilton" mentality needs to cease.

and, for the record, I simply don't care that "certain ethnicities" bewail the high percentages of "their men" who are incarcerated! Instead, they should concentrate on teaching, early on, and continually, what's right and wrong. Neither, am I the least bit perturbed over the "high recidivism rate" (over 80%- which should tell you the value (effectiveness) of the various ripoff, 'counseling' providers, bilking our dollars from the prison system.)

The problem is: every time we need to control these exorbitant costs, do they cut out the luxuries? Oh, NO! They just release them early, dumping them back on society! Now, where can I vote out THOSE decision makers??? (or is lock and load, and defend my own, my only recourse)?

and the juries should throw out any lawsuits against them (or better still- find for the criminal plaintiffs, in the amount of one penny (no costs or attorney's fees)). What better way to tell the criminals that we are VERY tired of their crap???
Then, present the CEC employees, involved, with bonuses and employee of the month accolades. LMAO
