The controversial Arizona law passed last month requires state and local police, after making "lawful contact," to check the immigration status of anyone they reasonably suspect is in the country illegally, and arrest those who cannot prove it.
The report by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press (www.people-press.org) found that 59 percent of adults polled in a national survey gave their overall approval to the law, which opponents charge is unconstitutional and a mandate for racial profiling.
Seventy-three percent said they backed a measure requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them, while 67 percent approve of allowing police to detain anyone who cannot verify that they are in the country legally.
The new law has pushed a debate over immigration to the fore in U.S. politics, and rebooted a drive by Obama and Senate Democrats to overhaul federal immigration laws -- although it is seen as a longshot before November congressional elections.
Obama supports a system allowing undocumented immigrants in good standing to pay a fine, learn English and become citizens. He also backs tightening border security and clamping down on employers that hire undocumented workers.
The survey, carried out among 994 adults -- found that only 25 percent supported Obama's handling of immigration policy, while more than twice as many -- 54 percent -- said they disapproved.
It found that Democrats are evenly split over the Arizona law -- which is set to come into effect at the end of July -- with 45 percent backing it and 46 percent saying they disapprove of it.
The measure, signed into law by Arizona's Republican Governor Jan Brewer on April 23, has triggered an international furor and unleashed legal challenges and calls for an economic boycott of the Grand Canyon state.
On Tuesday, United Nations human rights experts added their voices to criticism of the law, saying it may lead to police targeting people on the basis of ethnic origin, in violation of international law.

Of course you support your racists Republican Governor in Arizona, Akins! Who woul;d have ever thought otherwise. I am sure you support making people show a photo ID to vote too. Thta way you can catch the "illegals" and keep people to poor to have a driver's license from voting. You are an open book that is eay to read, Akins. If you are "for" something I know I am against it. If you say something bad about someone, I know it is a lie. If you say something good about someone, I know they are a snake.
Have we always had people this ignorant in Liberty County Ray, or are they just like roaches and when Liberty Dispatch turns the light on they go scrambling around with their stupid comments.
Hey LD, don't you think Arizona could use people like Greg Arthur and Chip Fairchild to stop all of that crime going on out there? They may would work cheap since there are plenty of senoritas.
People complaining that ANYONE has to show a driver's license win stopped........ That is racists?
The only thing we regret is Texas is not leading the way, right Ray.
I don't know what kind of white lightning some of you Texans are drinking down there, but if Ray Akins is a racists I am a can opener. Of all the crazy insults hurled at Ray up here while he was helping rid us of our "Greg Arthur", no one ever thought of pulling out the ole race card. Absurd.
I find your polls to be hard to believe. Americans are a caring people. How did they ask the questions? If the question is shouldn't people from Mexico do whatever they have to do to feed their family, your polls would be different.
The United States' immigration policy is easier on Mexico than Mexico's immigration policy toward any crossing their southern border.
Two words come to mind: NO AMNESTY the millions of illegal aliens in this country that have broken in line have potentially kept law abiding hispanics from becoming citizens faster.
the problem is compounded by the hundreds of cities, whose building inspectors look the other way at illegal construction workers. I have long been an advocate of placing a manila envelope, right next to posted building permits, wherein every worker on the jobsite must place a copy of his/her right to work documentation!
What we are dealing with, is wholesale government agencies' dereliction of duty- local, county, state, and federal!
Arizona has made a small attempt to correct the failings of just one agency-ICE. In TX, the largest two employers of illegals are state agencies: TxDOT and TEA!
I wish the Great State of Texas had lead the way, but since Arizona did, lets join our fellow Americans and stop giving our Country away. And, GET US THE HELL OUT OF THE U.N. !!!
What country would let millions of invaders cross their border and then start demanding entitlements? What country would allow millions of invaders from a sewer ditch third world country wave their flags in the streets? Would country would allow millions of invaders to stay in their country when thousands of their own citizens are out of work? What country would allow millions of invaders to receive free benefits when the country is broke? What country would treat invaders with open arms and change the culture if needed for them. Would country would allow invaders to not fire a shot and take over their country?
What country would not ask the invaders why they are not so tough and demanding in their own sewer ditch country? The answer? THE USA!!!
I am terribly diappointed in Liberty Dispatch. Not only because of your support for the Arizona Law, which is unconstitutional, but also because of all your negative opinions brought out in this article. To the publisher of this article i would like to ask, "would you like to be stopped by a police official and interrogated because they ASSUME you have something to with drugs? You may say "well I dont care because I know i have nothing to hide," but its the whole process that you go through which makes your self esteem low and humiliates you. Police authorites have no right to this, unless they have a probable cause, and "Suspicion" is not a probable cause!
Suspicion is probable cause
MOVING TO MEXICO
Dear Mr. President:
I'm planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me. We're planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements. We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:
1. Free medical care for my entire family.
2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.
3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English.
4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers.
5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history.
6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school.
7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch.
8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services.
9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico , but, I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws.
10. In case any of the Mexican police officers do not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer.
11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put U S. flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.
12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.
13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy.
14. I want to receive free food stamps.
15. Naturally, I'll expect free rent subsidies.
16. I'll need Income tax credits so, although I don't pay Mexican Taxes, I'll receive money from the government.
17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Government pays $4,500 to help me buy a new car.
18. Oh yes, I almost forgot, please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I'll get a monthly income in retirement.
I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who walk over to the U.S. from Mexico. I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.
Thank you so much for your kind help. You da man!!!
Dear "I am terribly disappointed"--Illegal Mexicans are a huge fact in this country, and the law is not racial profiling, it is simply thier race. I'm sick of politically correct. It's distroying this country. They invade us, go straight to the closest Human Resources facility, get food stamps, housing and free medical assistance--whatever they need--no problem. And did you know that if they cant speak our national language, english, the State has interpreters available via the phone to help them get their free food, housing, medical needs? They arrive here by the thousands illegally, immediately get the benifits of our tax dollars, commit crimes, spread their illnesses, join gangs, etc...
Ray I was working in mexico rencently and the arizona law came up. The did not support it. But they did come up with an solution that probably would work. Quit hiring them. I would like to charge all americans who support the arizona law: don't use their services and point out those americans who do. Let us know who exploits this cheap labor so we can chastise them and if they own a business we can boycott them.
How are illegals getting benefits from our tax dollars? Its the people who are chilling at home who are too lazy to look for work that are abusing the system of our social security. And about the food stamps, let me set a good example for you. A "legal" person goes to the grocery store in a nice cadillac, lincoln, etc. They get out and are dressed in a nice outfit. This person gets their groceries throughout the store. When its time for them to pay, BAM! They pull out their lone star card. Now you tell me who is getting all the benefits.
"How are illegals getting benifits from our tax dollars?"----WOW, you are one ignorant person!
Yes we have citizens who are lazy and abuse the system, however, some of those people you see using the lone star card may have been laidoff of their job, and those are benifits they have a right to as legal citizens of this country.
This Arizona law is just asking someone to verify that they are here legally. It is a Federal Law to enter this Country illegally. This Law is no different than pulling someone over and asking them if they have been drinking,if you are smuggling drugs, transporting illegal alliens or if they have drivers license and insurance. So tell me how the hell could this be a racial issue. I wish Texas had enough sense to pass this same law. I am not a racist, if people go throuh the process and become a legal citizen of the U.S, then I do not have a problem with that.
HoooYaa - Anyone that has a problem with this law is not an American. I think that all states should inforce this law. I wouldn't have a problem at all showing proof of my citizenship if suspected of a crime. Any imigrent is welcome in this country to be an Amercan- legaly. You want be a Mexican- GO HOME
