In the wake of the results coming in on election night, many people wanted to express their opinion about the voters’ decisions. It was late but most comments that came in to Liberty Dispatch were positive comments about the landslide election of a new sheriff. However a few comments came in that were laced with profanity and a reference to Logan Pickett and a rhetorical question similar to this one: “How about the election results, LD?”
Liberty Dispatch did not post the vulgarity-filled comments, but we will answer the question the Pickett supporters have acted as if they know the answer to.
After working over a decade to elect Republicans in this county and starting with zero, we are pleased. Many of the candidates that won Tuesday night have no opponents in the November election. The other Republicans are expected to do well in the general election. We have come so far in so little time after over 100 years of Democratic party domination, it makes me proud of voters in Liberty County. So the implications and the attempt to demonize LD, are pretty stupid as our party is already guaranteed to have made another huge step.
But to respond to those who are sincere in wanting to know how we feel about losing the closest race in the election, we will certainly acknowledge our disappointment. Karen McNair was better prepared to be a district attorney. Liberty Dispatch, at McNair’s request, held back some information that could have embarrassed Pickett and easily made up the difference in the vote totals. Our respect for Karen McNair is only magnified after researching her efforts as the assistant County Attorney and seeing how professional she handled herself in a very competitive political race.
One point that should be made and that is obvious to those who were at Liberty County Republican headquarters on election, Karen McNair was easily the favorite among those who are politically active and devoted to the local party. It would be very easy for Republicans to view Pickett as an opportunist and to declare a four year war on him. However, despite the popularity of Karen McNair and the absence of Logan Pickett at both the local Republican convention and the Republican gathering on election night, LD will take a wait and see attitude toward Pickett.
Will Logan Pickett correct the problems many have identified in the D.A.’s office? Will he continue the antagonism toward the judges? Will he end the selective prosecution and the covert politics that chooses winners and losers based on things other than the law?
Time will tell…

You might have to wait and see on Pickett, along with the fools that voted for him, but I don't. I know what a arrogant light weight he is and soon the people of Liberty County will as well. The Picketts are not and have never been Republicans and/or conservative. Logan is a spoiled little brat and will not be able to handle the position. The Pickett mistake will be felt for years. He won fair and square and Liberty county lost. This says more about the ignorance of the voters and less about the candidate. Dayton should be ashamed of their voter turnout. Enjoy the next four years!
I appreciate your positive point of view. Everyone deserves a second look.
This aint the Hatfields and McCoys. this county has been in a downward spiral for years.Spending and borrowing by commissioners court and wheeling and dealing by Hight and Fitzgerald. Logan better get a good start or the 49% that voted for McNair should show their disapproval.
I agree with everyone getting a second look, but that should have been done during the campaign process. There should have never been a Democrat running as a Republican and he damn sure should not have won.
I know who he is. I'm just telling you there is s turd in the punch bowl and it isn't going to turn into an orange, but you go ahead and have another cup an see.
I'm sorry I am not holding out hope for him to change. I really hope I am proven wrong. I would live to eat crow on this one.
We are going to see how Republican the Picketts are. Coming from Mike Little and what he has done to damage Republicans and the party, we will see.
Karen, we voted for you and believe in you. Do not give up, please run again. One thing we can all count on, these people will do the wrong thing. They will prove to the voters yet again how corrupt they are, different person running the DA's office but same corruption- watch and see. Pickett will be a one term like Patterson, you will win next time.
Pickett won but it was a very narrow win and should make him very nervous.
Thank you again for your hard work and all those who helped you.
We love you Karen, hang in there.
Pickett's CORRUPT acts will make it easy to get him booted next time. GUARANTEED. Nothing has changed from Mike Little to Pickett.
nobody gets a life term of office. One term- prove your integrity, or you're OUT!
Karen McNair would have won the election had she not bedded down with Royce Wheeler every time she came to Cleveland. The rumors were flying that if she won the DA slot and Royce lost his election she was going to hire him as a DA investigator. Well she lost and Royce is going to lose.
I think that previous comment is bull hockey. I dont think Karen made any deals with anyone. I think a lot of chauvinistic males and Patterson joining with Pickett got Pickett a lot of votes up in Cleveland that tilted the numbers in Pickett's favor just enough. Patterson knew if he lost he wanted to make sure Karen lost too.
Pickett better be glad some of his personal life didnt come out.
The Devil has to prevail for evil to continue. Evil will never be gone.
Dayton Texas sucks, us in Logan's campaign knew we had Logan covered in Dayton because Dayton Texas are nothing but a bunch of Republican lazy assed toothless hicks. Pickett #1.
Akins you and Pegues are a couple of republican jerk offs, Pickett, Warren and Little will make you pay.
Interesting we get to see how these people really feel, they are real full of themselves for now. Keep posting their comments.
It really came down to experience... not the 16 months at Joe Warren's elbow (and the 50% or less win rate on his 13 "trials"), but the LIFE experience necessary to manage highly educated people on a stress filled team.
But, His people got out the vote and the party faithful are deeply disappointed.
Yes, Ms. Mcnair had more overall trial experience and a much better win rate in County Court at law and JP courts. (The judges will tell you the rules are the same regardless of what Mr. Picket claimed.) She's managed her own practice and is well respected by the judges, litigators and courthouse staff.
Mr. Picket may grow into the job.
But if the Harris county Legal blogs are to be believed, Liberty county is no place to witness Professionalism in the courtroom and the word has gone out to beware... not of a hard nosed DA team -- beware that the frat boys are "high-fiving" their minor accomplishments in front of the jury.
The differences between these two candidates were never more profound and yet, his team prevailed.
I agree with some of the other comments: Mr. Picket probably will not address the issues that will be placed on his table.
One last note: the local republican party is facing a transition. On more than one occasion, members of the executive committee complained that brand new faces, who never graced the doors of the meeting rooms, were claiming the right to run as a Republicans in this primary. A candidates committee was formed to 'vet' these newcomers and, at least, determine if they agreed with the core principals and party planks.
We live in a two party system. The Liberty Count Republican party needs to get it's act together. They need to understand how to vet their own and back the best candidate in primary elections. If they don't figure this out..., well, we've just seen the result.
Very well said, my thoughts exactly.
It looks like Satan prevailed again.
