Long running history of corruption haunts Liberty County

There are always those who want peace at all cost and those who will settle for an early compromise for the sake of their own comfort and peace of mind. Indeed, there are people even now who would agree that injustice and corruption became synonymous with much of the behind the scenes misbehavior of our courthouse, but they too would say “we have won” so let’s “cool it”, rather than finish the job of restoring justice and truth here in our county.

But the odor of things not done right lingers and its stench will either lead us to right the wrongs that were done or it will embolden those who will take a mile when given an inch. We have only “won” when the change that was long fought for and hoped for occurs for all… No one should be left as a casualty. We win only when justice is the norm and it is expected – past and present. We can not say we have cleaned up this mess when the bitter smell of unfairness is still in the air and the excess of a self serving good ole boy system can still be seen and some are left bearing the burden of a hand far heavier than that of justice.

An example of such a thing is the much talked about and much litigated Janet Harrelson case. Much of what was alleged has been overturned by higher courts, but the unpleasant odor of impropriety by our public officials has never been tried in our courts. The good ole boy system’s practice of vigilantism chose what they chose so they had in their hand puppet judge and jury. They pronounced their guilt and in many ways symbolically lynched the accused. Those who can not smell the foul odor of selective prosecution are not only in need of a nose doctor, they need an eye, ear, nose, and throat specialists.

Janet Harrelson’s assertion that she was instructed by public officials in how to help get her incarcerated son to Dayton and how to spend some time in a private home with him before he was returned to prison are not only believable, they are practically the only plausible explanation for what happened. One must have to be blind and deaf and dumb to believe just because she was the County treasure-elect that she could pull off such a thing by herself.

Are we now, because we have won one election, going to sweep past cover-ups under the rug for the sake of “minding our own business” or are we going to try lay down the foundations for keeping our local government clean and accountable? Our Founding Fathers said the foundation could only exist if we remained “vigilant”.

Shouldn’t we now ask those questions that were not asked then? Is there an environment in the courthouse now that will allow the truth to be told? Shouldn’t we pursue justice “for all”? Who helped Harrelson? Who lied to her? Who lied to investigators and who lied on the stand?

And was this organized in advance by some? And if it was, what laws does that break? When listening to the evidence in the past, some have been struck with the focus John Archer placed on making sure Harrelson was indicted before her inauguration. Additional information has revealed that Judge Cain had gone out of town. Archer may not have had all of his ducks in a row. Despite the time of night, Archer still pushed Cain, who was taking his wife on an anniversary date, to do his public duty and pre-empt Harrelson from the swearing in day the following day. Archer may have caught Cain off guard as he pulled Cain into a plan that would be bad politics for him. For years Judge, Cain has fielded questions about Archer’s actions that night. Archer called so late and set such a priority on his legal action against Harrelson that Cain was thinking more about how to properly handle his petition rather than how it would appear. There is no other plausible explanation for how a District Judge could end up at his house at midnight with Bill Buchanan, KSHN radio, and a pile of legal paper and witnesses on such an important matter. John Archer was focused on whacking Janet Harrelson; Judge Cain was focused on his anniversary, and no one was worried about the politics of a “midnight court” for the Judge.

On the night of Archer’s legal maneuvering, where were all of Archer’s fellow Democrats who Harrelson say okayed her actions? Whether they were hiding under the rug or swept under the rug, it is time for openness and fairness in our courts. The truth needs to come out. The courthouse needs to have a fresh fragrance. We are not a county run arbitrarily by District Attorney, Mike Little and his corrupt acts. And we are not a county that takes lightly all of these counts against Harrelson that were overturned. WE THE PEOPLE have reclaimed most of the courthouse. It is now time to repair the damage done where possible. Let the chips fall where they may.

Soon others who were involved in this injustice will be called to task for their conspired actions.

I hope someone sends the state bar a copy of this complaint.

I was extremely concernen Judge Cain decided to switch couldn't figure out a consistent pattern with him. He was the only one with guts enough to face down County Judge Fitzgerald, but he also had all of the stories about holding this court for Archer at his house. I asked him about it before the election. He still regrets it. He lives five minutes from the courthouse. All of the complaints about him would have been aimed at John Archer if he would have just drove those five minutes. Archer's little hanging party made up of Bill Buchanan and the whole legal zoo would have been the focus, rather than the unusual location. Harrelson would have benefited by a different focus too.

Whether the focus referred to was caused by Buchanan wanting to brag about going to a District Judge's house or it was his diabolical way of steering people to jump the judge's ass instead of question the puppetmaster (John Archer), who knows? Buchanan may not be real smart, but he is real sinister.

First let's get this straight, Harrelson was an idiot to even ask about getting her son out for a few hours. Second let's get this straight, Harrelson is an idiot for trusting John Archerm - Cain is too, for the same reason. Archer uses people and if necessary throws them under the bus. Up until this lawsuit Harrelson has taken allof the legal and financial heat and Cain has taken all of the political heat. Does Archer sleep well at night? of course he does. he was trained under LBJ.

Murrey Kinney is a friend of mine and John Archer is no Murrey Kinney. Different neurosis.

It is about time the rest of this case come out into the public light!

Beausoliel, Taylor, Arthur, and God knows who else ....... by the time all of these officials told me something, I might believe it too. What Harrelson did seems almost crazy until you think of her as a mother and maybe a progression of ideals unchecked by all of these bigshots.

Did Harrelson ever hold office? how could she be removed if she never held office? I really don't remember- did she finish Skidmore's term?

I never have understood how or why Mike Little laid it on Harrelson so heavy for this victimless crime but never pursued any of the other people involved.

Understand this sir : SELECTIVE PROSECUTION

Anonymous said...

Hellman, it is not just selective prosecution, it is political assassination. Little took care of someone Archer needed out.

Anonymous said...

Little risked a lot to help Chairman Archer.Look how horrible that all looked on the face of it. It is known that Harrelson's actions would have soon be made public by Republicans, so it is an obvious logical conclusion that Little not only took out Harrelson but he protected all of these other Democrats.

Isn't it true that Rusty Hight was made aware of allof this before Archer filed his Petition for Removal. Terry Bivens is known to be a long time loyal supporter of Hight and she was the Benedict Arnold friend that kept going back and getting more and more information from Harrelson and feeding it to whoever would listen.

Anonymous said...

Someone said Mrs. Bivens is now a secretary for John Otto. I am not sure if someone doing what she did to a friend could have any integrity, but if she had any, she would have gone to law enforcement rather than try to climb the political ladder by telling this to republicans and Rusty Hight.

Is Kinney a man or a woman? One person refers to mary and another Murrey. This is not the person that writes into The Baytown Sun and sounds like some fourth grade drop out from Russia is it?

Mike Little buries people under all kinds of charges to make the public feel where there is smoke there must be fire. he also knows it costs a fortune to defend someone when all of these charges are heaped on them. The fact that a person gets them turned over in courts later never has bothered Little. he just gets on KSHN or one of the local papers and they give him the last word on what happened.

I have agreed with very little this blog has said about politics, but I must say i have had first hand experience with Mike Little and there is plenty more to say about why he should be removed from office IMMEDIATELY.

Janet is a great example of someone who was punished way beyond what would normally be called for considering allof the evidence. there is no telling all of the money it has cost her plus the unending public humiliation.

John Archer made this something it was NOT.Harrelson did nothing in the capacity of County Treasurere-elect. If she had tried, who in their right mind would believe someone in that office had any authority to manipulate any of this anyway? This truly has stunk from the very beginning.

Thank you Lord.I have lived long enough I may get to see what really happened in all of this. Now if we just knew who shot Kennedy.

Tired of Phil Fitzgerald. Tired of John Archer.Tired of Mike Little.

Well, if you think about it awhile, Janet harrelson did not just walk into the prison and pick up her son, then bring him home for a meal and movie before bringing him on to Dayton. She had to have someone helping her. The ones that helped her are just as guilty as she was, if in fact she even did anything wrong.

Anonymous said...

Idiot or not, Harrelson was acting as a mother and had asked all the right people about the move to make sure it was ok, was told it was and then was pooped on when those same people lied on the stand in her trial. My goodness, people, there was an armed deputy present at all times!

To anonymous who asked "I never have understood how or why Mike Little laid it on Harrelson so heavy for this victimless crime but never pursued any of the other people involved", let's look at the timing of Harrelson's trial. Little had just lost his case against Toby Wilburn and needed a win to save face. He only needed ONE win and he got it by tainting Harrelson's trial.

Anonymous said...

Harrelson had been in office all of 39 days when this all came down. Do we really believe that she could amass enough power in such a very short time to manipulate everyone that Little says she manipulated ?

Cain..regrets it. Yes, I'm sure he does. Why? Possibly, because it has been made public and taints his image. Question: If no one would have found out about the meeting and " court being held at his home," would he still say he regrets it? Maybe, that's a question he should ask himself? I believe that overall he is a good man.

I believe he has the ability to judge fairly. We all make mistakes.

Forgiveness.. ( making our past wrongs right, if possible )and doing what's right today, that's where we are.

Ray, Mike Little MUST be defeated in the Republican Primary in 2012. He is evil as can be.

Judges have to play the cards dealt them. If you look at his record, Cain is a no nonsense, law and order judge that has no more complaints about fairness than any other Judge who has served so long. He continues a distinguished career with the thumbs up of Repulican voters.

Little has Fontenot and Warren working for him because; Birds of a feather, fly together.

In reference to comment, " Judges have to play the cards dealt them."

The art of dealing cards can mean the difference between a fair game and unfair game.

A dealer,( attorney, in this case )...can reveal or conceal cards, depending on what they hope the outcome of the case to be.

Many attorneys are liars..that I have accepted as fact.

The judge, however is a man of integrity.

My hope is that our judges will take time to hear all facts regarding the cases brought before them. Rumors can be lethal.( not literally, but they can kill the spirit of individuals..if allowed). Judgments swayed by these are downright scary.

It would be a very tough job, considering the character of many offenders/clients brought before judges on a daily basis. It would definitely be difficult to differentiate..especially if, perhaps.. ones attorney is slandering clients name to others, including judge based on...here we go again, "RUMORS." ( sorry, but it happens)

Again, I'm sure it's a tough job. Cain is a man of integrity. He has my utmost respect and I believe he is a man we can trust and depend on for fairness and honesty, now and in the future.

We only have one new comissioner being Commissioner Warner, You can expect the same out of Good ole boy brown I reckon. Lets hope Charlotte and Karen can make a difference on the commisioners court.

Judge Don Taylor is the Judge that should be under the spot light and in the hot seat here, not Judge Cain. Taylor's acts, and ultimate lies under oath in this case, to protect his own sorry behind, are off the scale of anything decent. He should be made to pay for his crimes.
