Yesterday, most in Liberty County received their tax statements for 2010. I have talked to many individuals who have stated that their rate didn't increase but their appraisal value increased in some cases up to 30%. Most are mad as hell.
In the current market most Home Values are decreasing but I consulted a local Realtor and he stated, "The property values are starting to increase ever so slightly".
With the ever decreasing sales tax revenues for Liberty County, I am sure that most expected a tax increase. Not in this County. One commissioner stated, "Our tax rate is 4% lower than ten years ago" in one of his press releases.
I questioned this tax/value increase and it was said that they are using a new appraisal evaluation structure for improvements like storage sheds etc...
Is it that it is election year and the current commissioners didn't want to raise taxes so they had them raise they values to keep them looking good?
Liberty County continues to amaze me in it dealings. With other counties property values going down due to a slow economy Liberty County's property values are increasing even with a 11.1% unemployment rate(as of 2/2010).

Marcus, Marcus, Marcus....this has been going on for years and people have been complaining about it. The commissioners and the county judge have bragged about keeping the tax rate down and Allen and the boys have raised our appraisals. Are you just now tuning in? No wonder you lost in your bid for office. You show up and want to excite us all to do something about things we have been trying to do something about for years. What, besides writing on the internet are YOU going to do about some of the stuff you complain about. Or do you have to have a paid position?
Hey Marcus a guy I went to high school with eleven years ago and I were comparing our tax bills and you're righ if you are saying Liberty County is sucking us dry. He lives in College Station and his taxes actually went down. Not mine!
This is all a Part of Liberty County's way of doing business. Conner is tied into this bunch of Commissioners and does what they tell him to do. if you go to the Appraisal District and complain about them raising the value of your property, they have some lame excuse that this is the way the State is making us do the appraisals now or we appraise this building this way and that building another way and the carport yet another way. Just a pack of Bull $hit because they think we are all ignorant and they can dazzle us with their BS. I am sick and tire do f Conner and his BS Appraisal District. With the new cad appraisals I hope the Liberty voters think hard about the upcoming bond election and how it will affect their property taxes. Some values almost doubled. What is the cad up to?
everybody missed the truth, here. Truth is, your appraisal appeals go to the appraisal review board; BUT...that board is ENTIRELY comprised of appointees... by the TAXING ENTITIES!! (read: jury...of the thieves, by the thieves, and FOR the thieves)!
Remember the great school tax reduction rate, from a few years back? well, it was OFFSET by increasing the appraised values. Then, the school tax rate started climbing right back up.... with bond elections, and various other increases.
Well at least we can't blame it on the tax and spend Democrats (some Republicans went up there and did the same thing). Oh but wait, We can blame it on the new way Democrats are doing their stealing : not tax and spend, but SPEND AND TAX! Vote for change we can afford, vote straight Republican.........
With all due respect to you Marcus, I agree with the first comment. Your rhetoric sounds a great deal like a "me too" politician. If you never want to be beaten again DO SOMETHING, it will distinguish you from the Charlotte Warner, Norman Brown, Teri Bivens crowd who somehow get a job and a paycheck out of all of this, but really just go around to get around.
Marcus, how about a list of counties in our part of the state where the property values went down as you state?
We expect overall property values in Harris County to drop by some $11.6 billion for a percentage decrease of about 4% compared to 2009. In the residential market, which has generally been flat, about 70% of existing homes were worth the same on January 1, 2010, as they were on that same date in 2009. However, nearly 30% of the residential properties in the county have declined in value over the last year, and only about 1% saw a value increase--primarily due to new construction. (http://www.hcad.org/) Maybe I was wrong to compare us to Harris County our neighbor. They don’t have the job market that we do since we have Boomerang moving into Liberty County. To the posters who asked, "Do something" will you help me? Yes I am guilty of sitting back and letting everything happen in our County, State, and Country. I finally woke up. I was shaken. And no I am not looking for a paycheck out of this. If I was looking for a paycheck I would shut up and be like most of the high school graduates of Liberty County who have since moved on and after colleage stayed where the money is. Not in Liberty County. I grew up in Liberty County I love it here. I would like to make it better.

Many folks I know are asking if anyone knows of a tax protest company that will come to Liberty County. We have several properties here in Liberty County and in Matagorda County. Last year, we contacted a company in Houston called Commercial Tax Network. We filled out a few forms, sent them our tax statements with some information on the homes, and they did the rest. They go to the tax board and plead your case, you don't even have to be there. A few months later, they sent us a statement showing how much they reduced our taxes on each property from the proposed CAD appraisal, and they charge 25% of whatever they save you - no savings, no charge. What they saved us wasn't that much, BUT OUR TAXES DIDN'T GO UP!!! We intend to use them again this year. Thanks for the information on this Commercial Tax Network. I will give them a try. This liberty County Appraisal District is out of control. They raise your property taxs, knowing most people will not go to the trouble of protesting. If you do not protest these Tax Raises, then this means you agree with their Tax Appraisal. People, get out there and protest this Tax Rape.
